Last summer we built a squash archway leading into our main vegetable beds and I am so excited to grow a variety of squash to hang from it this year! Vertical gardening gives you so many more options to grow more food in a small space like our 1/10th acre urban homestead. But which squash to choose? Here’s the following squash I’ve decided to plant from seed.

Squash Archway & Pond in Progress

If you’re new around here, soil blocks are my favorite way to plant seeds! I use a 2inch blocker and set about 40 blocks for seeds within on tray. It is, by far, my favorite way to grow from seed that I’ve had the best luck with. Plus, there’s no transplant shock, If this sounds foreign to you, no worries – I’ve laid out all the details of using soil blocks in a free guide you can get here.

Here are the varieties I’m planning to test out on the vining squash arch this year. I get my seeds from High Mowing Organic Seed – their philosophy & mission alone are a reason to support this phenomenal company, and their seeds have been the best at germinating for me to boot. Plus, it’s not too late to order your squash seeds and plant them this year!

Check out the following squash seeds if you are interested in growing squash vertically this year too!

  • Honey Butternut – These adorable butternut squash are less intimidating to cook with as they typically provide a serving of yummy squash. Plus I think they’ll look adorable hanging from the archway.
  • Winter Luxury – This lovely is the best of the BEST for pies, cheesecake, and soups!
  • Winter Sweet F1 Winter Squash – These gorgeous gray, complexed flavored squash are delicious and their flavor improves while in storage over winter!

I’ll keep you posted how this archway grows over the year over on our instagram – I have dreamed of an archway like this for so long and can’t wait to make it a reality this year!
