I have been experimenting for some time now and finally figured out the BEST pizza sauce, folks! It is a simple combination of fresh and dried herbs, a little coconut sugar for sweetness, and fresh garlic and shallots to start. You can see this masterpiece in being made in our Vegan Pizza Night at the Smiths video out soon.
One critical note for this sauce: When purchasing tomatoes for cooking, we always do so in a glass jar instead of a can. Click here to learn more about why we do this for safety.
The BEST Pizza Sauce Recipe
Ingredients
- 2-3 tbsp shallots, finely diced
- 2-3 garlic cloves (minced)
- 1 tbsp avocado oil
- 1 jar Jovial diced tomatoes (18.3 ounces)
- 1 tbsp tomato paste
- 3/4 tbsp himalayan salt
- 1/4 tsp fresh ground pepper
- 1 tsp fresh thyme
- 1 tsp fresh oregano
- 1 tsp coconut sugar
- 1 tsp Penzey's Frozen Pizza Seasoning
Instructions
- Place the diced shallots in a pan with avocado oil on medium heat. Cook until translucent and then add freshly minced garlic and give the pan a couple stirs.
- Add the entire jar of diced tomatoes as well as a table spoon of tomato paste. Stir to combine.
- Add all the additional seasonings listed and let sauce simmer for 3-5 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool.
- Store the additional sauce not used for pizza (we just clean the glass jar it comes in and add remaining sauce to it to place in fridge). We use it within the week on tortillas, bread, etc to brighten any other dishes.
